Obsessed with how you categorized this list --and also loving the brief review of your experience with "media deprivation" so I don't have to try it for myself! I'm so on board with your thoughts on Tropic of Violence and am glad you were moved, even if the moving feeling was strongly upset-ness (me too). I'll be looking forward to hearing what you think of Sisters K!! I was able to read some of an early version when I was an assistant in publishing and have been looking forward to finding myself a copy now that it's out in the world!
There was *some* value in reevaluating how, where, and when I use media as a tool for distraction, but it was not a creatively fulfilling exercise for me -- and the ~7 other people in the group I was discussing with. The world of 2024 makes reading indispensable!
Very much looking forward to Sisters K having read the Dostoevsky somewhat recently!
sad to say i agree - i liked *some* of the adult (i enjoyed how cold and smooth the writing was) but found it repetitive and stretching credulity in ways i am not confident were 100% intentional. the character was SO naive and unsure that by the 3rd time she was questioning why her older lover was interested in her i just thought, okay we know the older woman is Bad because this *is* a child. intentional, maybe, but tiring.
Love to see The Twilight Zone love!!!!!! God that book was so so good. We were obvs connected a bit recently bc boy do I have some dud reviews coming this week. I read SO many books in October that made me so fucking bored.
Nooo, bored is the worst emotion a book can generate! All the bad books I read were mysteries so at least the main emotion was incredulousness (maybe a little insulted too).
Lmao I called the theme this month ‘hauntingly average’. There were 3 that didn’t bore me so - all is not lost! But yeh bored is the absolute worst feeling to feel. It made me feel a bit existential for a hot minute.

the problem is, its fun to read reviews of the duds 😂i felt very similar about Martyr, a bit unfocused but how could you hate Cyrus?
i think the adult was so-so...We do What we Do in the Dark did it better.
